Elderflower Aperol Spritz

The Aperol Elderflower Spritz is a twist on the classic version with a splash of St-Germain to give it a nice floral hint!

Having a bottle of Aperol around is a must in our house. We use it for some sort of Aperol Spritz quite often. Give it a try with a bit of gin or vodka if you want to spike the drink up a bit and incorporated into an Italian type of sangria would be interesting as well.
Enjoy!

What is an Aperol Spritz?

If you haven't discovered the Italian appertif called Aperol, you are truly missing out. This is a great alternative to a mimosa but also an excellent summer drink with a very vibrant color.

It is as simple to make as a mimosa but doesn’t have nearly as much fruit sweetness. Aperol is an Italian aperitif that should be easy to find. It’s a bitter orange liqueur that is 11% alcohol. Mixed with Italian sparkling wine – Prosecco (generally about the same alcohol level as Aperol) – and a splash of soda over ice and you have the vibrant orange Aperol Spritz.

So, what makes this such a great drink?

Everything. Aperol is a unique liqueur with a touch of sweetness and a good amount of bitterness. It’s not heavy on the alcohol, so it’s very complimentary to Prosecco, which is naturally sweeter than a brut Champagne or sparkling wine that is used in a mimosa. The bitterness of Aperol is not nearly on the same level as similar aperitifs like Campari, which is typically used in a Negroni. Although it’s light on the alcohol like a mimosa, don’t think of this as a mimosa replacement – it has its own identity, flavor and place in the world. It’s an anytime drink, but is refreshing and colorful and perfect for sitting on the porch or by the pool on a warm day!
